Your treatment journey

Should you present with an infected tooth, we will explain how root canal treatment will benefit your oral and general health. We will never rush or push you to go ahead with treatment, though we strongly recommend choosing to have root canal treatment if your tooth is severely infected.

Step 1: Consultation

Your tooth is carefully examined by one of our general dentists or root canal specialist. During your consultation, we will be able to tell you if root canal treatment is an option for saving your tooth. We use sophisticated, accurate diagnostic technology to identify the severity of the infection and whether root canal treatment is needed.

Step 2: Treatment

The area is numbed using anaesthetic, and the decayed or broken part of the tooth is removed, as well as the dead or dying nerve tissue. The canals are then disinfected, and the tooth is sealed to prevent further infection from entering.

Step 3: Filling or crown

Depending on how much of your tooth enamel needs to be removed, we will either place a filling or a bespoke crown at a future appointment.

FAQs

1. When is root canal treatment necessary?

Root canal treatment saves a tooth when the nerve within it has become compromised due to an infection. Without treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of the mouth, jawbone, and body.

2. How will I know I need root canal treatment?

Dental infections don’t always present the most obvious symptoms. Therefore, it’s important that you attend routine check-ups, as a dentist can spot even the most subtle of symptoms.

This said, there are several common symptoms of dental infection to watch out for:

  • Tooth sensitivity.
  • A change in your tooth shade (infected teeth can look grey in shade).
  • A bad taste in your mouth.
  • Persistent pain and sensitivity.

3. What is the success rate of root canal treatment?

First-time root canal treatment can have a success rate of 90% when performed by a professional clinician such as our dentists at Yourdental Wellness. The earlier you come and see us if you notice something doesn’t feel quite right, the better chance we have of saving your tooth.
