The TMJ joints connect your bottom jaw to your skull, controlling your jaw movement.

TMJ disorders are common, affecting this essential movement and causing painful symptoms on opening or closing, as well as related to issues like teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism). Custom-made splints (mouthguards) and muscle-relaxing treatments can be used to reverse the pain, giving you the freedom to enjoy a pain-free lifestyle again.

Step 1: Consultation

Your dentist will examine your jaw and mouth to see how severely your TMJ joint is affected. We may recommend restorative treatment for teeth that have been severely worn down as a result of grinding.

If you’re someone who grinds their teeth and clenches their jaw, muscle-relaxing treatments can be suitable. These temporarily reduce the strength of the muscles in the jaw, preventing it from over-clenching.

Alternatively, a splint or mouthguard can be created to prevent involuntary clenching and grinding whilst you sleep (this is the most common period when grinding tends to occur).

Step 2: Your treatment

Muscle-relaxing treatments: these will be administered to sites across the jaw. Treatment takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Custom-made splint: we will take digital impressions of your teeth so that a custom splint can be created. This is then fitted on a follow-up appointment, ensuring a good fit.

FAQs

1. Is my jaw pain definitely related to TMJ Pain?

If your jaw pain is accompanied by clicking sounds, it’s highly likely that this is your TMJ joint trying to tell you there’s something not quite right. If you regularly grind your teeth, this is also a tell-tale precursor to TMJ pain.

We recommend making an appointment to have your jaws looked at by our professional dentists so that a diagnosis can swiftly be made.

2. Is tooth wear serious?

Left untreated, bruxism (tooth wear) can be serious for your teeth. Worn teeth are more prone to decay and erosion, so it’s important to have them restored if you wish to avoid these problems in the future.

3. Can a splint also treat my snoring?

We can also create splints to prevent your airway from being restricted whilst you sleep. These anti-snoring appliances can minimise, if not eradicate, snoring and a more serious condition called lseep apnoea. This is when oxygen levels in your body can be affected due to momentary lapses in breathing whilst asleep. Special mouthguards can help position the jaws to reduce this.
