It’s normal to feel drowsy during IV sedation, and you may fall asleep or even have a faded recollection of the procedure. However, you won’t be unconscious, and you will have the capacity to communicate with your dentist throughout.
At Yourdental Wellness, we have a highly trained sedationist who carries out all our sedation (both IV and inhalation) procedures. This ensures that your dentist can focus on the dentistry and the rest is taken care of by the clinician carrying out the sedation.
Purpose: To relax you during your chosen dental procedure.
Treatment time: Variable (Depending on the procedure).
Anaesthetic: Yes (If the dental treatment requires it).
Process: Administered using a cannula on the arm or back of the hand.
Cost: From £350 for the first hour.
Step 1: Consultation
You and your dentist will discuss the possibility of IV sedation for your chosen treatment. Your dentist will outline exactly what to expect on the day of treatment and answer your questions. A follow-up consultation by phone or in person will be carried out with our anaesthetist.
Step 2: Your treatment
On the day of your treatment, you will need to be accompanied by a chaperone, as you may feel some minor drowsiness as the sedation wears off (you will not be able to drive yourself home).
The sedative is administered with a very small needle and works within minutes to relax your body and mind. Once your dentist and anaesthetist have checked, your response is as it should be, and your chosen procedure is carried out. You will be closely monitored by a sedation dentist who will check your vitals and blood pressure and administer more of the sedative if needed.
It’s normal to feel drowsy during IV sedation, and you may fall asleep or even have a faded recollection of the procedure. However, you won’t be unconscious, and you will have the capacity to communicate with your dentist throughout.
Once you have been sedated, you will be completely unaware of the nerves and anxiety that you felt about visiting the dentist for your procedure.
In many cases, once the sedative has worn off, patients feel a new lease of confidence with visiting the dentist and don’t feel they need sedation in the future.
Communication is key when helping our nervous or anxious patients. We believe in honest and open dialogue with you, and we completely understand that building trust with you might not happen overnight, especially if you have a particularly deep-rooted fear of the dentist.
Our reception and clinical teams have been hand-picked not just for their valuable knowledge but for their calm temperament and compassionate, kind nature.
We look forward to helping you on your journey to confidence.
